The Autism Express App
Archived Content 2010 - 2011

For several years this was the official website for the Autism Express app.
Special education teachers often find themselves in need of exciting, innovative techniques for their classrooms. Thanks to technology, those innovations are now often no more than a tap away. Autism Express is a free app available on both iOS and Android tablets that offers ever-present flashcards that can help autistic students understand emotional expression. The app displays 12 buttons, each a cartoon caricature of a facial expression of how one feels: happy, sad, hungry, etc. Pressing a button creates a full-screen image of that emotion.
The new owners of this domain feel that this app and its information should remain visible on the WWW.

Since the content is from the site's 2010 - 2011 archived pages, some resource links may be out of date..

1 in 160 children worldwide have autism in some form.  With that being said, there is a general consensus that most of these children have difficulty recognizing emotional expressions and miss facial cues of others.

That is why AutismXpress is the key to unlock the door to understanding children’s emotions, to educate Autistic children on how to express their feeling and engage them through interactive games, emotion memory, and expression questions.

AutismXpress is available on the Apple iPhoneiPad, and iTouch and also on most Android Mobile and Android Tablet devices. Below are the official links to download the app. We hope it brings you and your children much joy and happiness :)

How can we increase the EQ of kids with autism?

I would like to introduce AutismXpress a fun interactive smart phone & touch tablet app for children who are having trouble recognizing and understanding facial expressions and identifying the emotional states of others and respond accordingly.

Our focus when creating AutismXpress is to help build an Autistc Childs’ Emotional Quotient or EQ, which essentially refers to the ability to understand self and others when it comes to goals, intentions, behaviours, responses, feelings and so on. Our goal is to help increase social awareness and encourage appropriate behaviour.

We created this app after we saw a need for autistic kids to be able to play while they learn, to stay fully engaged during repetitive conditioning. We've had a lot of exposure to the problems, people dealing with autism(including parents, carers and teachers) face, on a daily basis. Also my wife Melissa is a teachers aide at the Vern Barnet School for Autistic Children, helping kids within the Autism Spectrum learn to communicate and socialise, with the aim of eventually integrating them into the mainstream schooling system.

Even our own digital creative agency StudioEmotion has worked with Autism Spectrum Australia to create and maintain their online digital presence and educational/community portal. We have all gained a lot of first-hand experience and insights into the latest technology and educational tools available to the parents, carers and teachers of autistic children.

How can we help autistic kids understand emotions?

AutismXpress is our first app to assist parents, carers and teachers with a host of fun learning tools for their kids to engage and interact with. It currently consists of three sensory mini games...

  1. The first called Feeling Finder randomly places 12 emotions on the screen and allows the kids to click on the emoticons and watch the corresponding animations, some are serious and some are silly but they are all entertaining.
  2. The second challenge is called Emotion Matching which is essentially a memory game to reveal and match identical pairs of emoticons.
  3. The third game, titled Expression Questions is an activity that parents, carers and teachers can play with their kids, helping them to associate the corresponding emoticon to the random emotive word.

With your support our plan to release a continuous stream of free updates with many more emoticons and fun emotion related experience and challenges for kids to enjoy working their way through.

I wanted to say a special thank you to all the people who have contacted us, the response we have received regarding the AutismXpress app has been really positive and helpful, we really appreciate any feedback you have as we want to continue to help and create the best experience possible to help as many kids as we can.

If you are interested in promoting this fun educational EQ app on your website, blog, forum or community portal please contact us to become a partner.

On a final note we are also very excited about another top secret project in the works that takes the AutismXpress concepts to a completely new level of engagement and accessibility, so stay tuned. If you would like us to notify you when it becomes available please contact us to let us know.

Kind regards,
Kim Grantham

P.S. AutismXpress is available on the Apple iPhoneiPad, and iTouch and also on most Android Mobile and Android Tablet devices. Below are the official links to download the app. I hope it brings you and your children much joy and happiness :)

Update: My mother bought this app for my son, Jak's touch tablet. I was a bit hesitant but spoke to other people in my Autism facebook group and several were really enthusiastic about it. I never know what will engage our son. He is constantly surprising me. For instance. We have a cockapoo hybrid dog, Flynn, who my son loves to stroke her back. The tactile feeling of her tight curls smooths Jak particularly when he becomes agitated. Our dog will lie down on her comfortable round dog bed from GoodnightDog and Jak curls right up with him. This e commerce site offers these amazing round pillow beds that are designed with a dog in mind, but are also suitable for humans. We bought a second dog bed from the same site that was one size up from the original so both Jak and Flynn would have plenty of room.

When I introduced Jak to the Autism Express app on his touch tablet, he became totally engaged, but not before taking the tablet over to Flynn and showing him. Now Jak spends many afternoon stroking Flynn and playing on his touch tablet with the AutismXpress app.

Great app to make the kids laugh. - ★★★★★
My son has a new favorite game to play. Brings a smile to my kids everytime. It's great to see an app that addresses a growing issue. Is it just me or has there been an increase in Autism lately. Maybe something to do with formula milk or vaccine shots. Great app, looking forward to more levels.

Great - ★★★★★
i know three people with autism, you are doing a great job help people understand the prevalence and importance of autism. and i completely agree that awareness of autism, is low. Not only are you making more awareness, but you are also teaching children/teens and adults who have autism about social interaction and behaviours making it a little bit better for people suffering autism to understand. Keep up the great work, it is great that people like you are stepping up to help awareness !

AutismXpress: Press Release

Posted on: May 6th, 2011 by admin

Due to the success of our previously released app AutismXpress, (over 30,000 downloads) and as part of our continued commitment to helping families living and dealing with Autism on a day to day basis, we are incredibly pleased to bring you AutismXpress: Pro.

In addition to an improved version of the original game, AutismXpress: Pro features 2 totally new games, which are both also designed to help sufferers of Autism identify and express their emotions through an easy to use and fun interface.

A big thanks to all those of you who downloaded the original app. and for the feedback provided, which has gone a long way to helping in the development of the all new pro version. Enjoy!!

A percentage of any revenue generated from the sale of our app will be re-invested into the creation of upgrades and new Autism aid, based games.

Autism is a lifelong disability that affects the way a person communicates and relates to other people and the world around them. Those affected typically display major impairments in three areas: social interaction, communication and behavior (restricted interests and repetitive behaviors).

1 in 160 children have autism in some form, making it twice as common as cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy, childhood deafness or blindness and ten times more common than childhood leukemia. Despite the prevalence of this condition, for which there is no cure, awareness and access to appropriate services remains remarkably low.

The reason for creating AutismXpress is that people with autism have trouble interpreting emotions and understanding what different facial expressions may represent.
